COMPLETE DRESS IN CONCERT ORDER

7:30:              Gadfly & Korngold

8:20ish           BREAK

8:40ish           Kije Star Wars

NOTES:

1) LISTEN

At last rehearsal I made comments about the sound we seek in Kije: clean, lined up, closer to Mozart than Star Wars.

Listen to the rehearsal log, first half, starting at 37:15 for the Wedding and Troika, noting places that are a bit in the cracks.

First Run in Concert Order (with some stops and starts)

7:50:                Kijé (all, in order)

8:20ish            BREAK

8:40ish            Korngold

9:10                 Star Wars

NOTES:

1) Kijé Strings Rewrite

I am going to concede the battle to the heroic Lieutenant Kijé. That little string accompaniment figure in Wedding (5 after 35; 37) and (Burial 63; 69) can and should be simplified. The actual notes/rhythm are not essential to the piece, but the figure is getting in the way of the primary lines. For these places make this change:

2) Korngold reference recordings

I wanted the orchestra to get their teeth into the music before listening to other models. Since some of you asked, I offer a couple of listening samples on YouTube:

·      This one lets you follow the score (but tempos are brisker than what I expect from Ms Carpenter):https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4dfCXv9_hc

·      Frankfort Radio Symphony: Good for tempo, orchestra playing, conductor

WELCOME BACK!

7:30:    STAR WARS

NB: I changed my mind about programming. We will play –

1.     Main Titles

2.     Leia’s Theme

5. Throne Room

8:15:    GADFLY (with Maureen)

8:30ish – BREAK

8:45:    KIJÉ

9:15:    KORNGOLD CONCERTO

–        REHEARSAL #40 to end (the infamous “fugato” section)

NOTES:

1) Korngold cello concerto will feature CCO alum Jennifer Carpenter. Very dense, romantic score. Plenty of recordings for you to listen to, or you can watch Deception, the 1946 movie for which Korngold wrote the score that became the concerto. Claude Rains plays the tyrannical, egotistical composer/conductor, Bette Davis his protégé concert pianist, Paul Henreid the love-of-her life cellist. Requires some suspension of disbelief: all the musicians are wealthy enough to live in luxurious NY apartments.

2) A wise person noted that the string parts are chock full of divisis (nice catch, Becky). It makes sense for string players to know where they are sitting.
